the 37th annual Midwinter Revels
"The Butterfly Lovers of Gold Mountain"
Live performances took place December 9-11 and 16-18
Performed at First Congregational Church of Oakland, 2501 Harrison St
This year's "Midwinter Revels" show, The Butterfly Lovers of Gold Mountain, is set in Gold Rush Era California with a touch of the supernatural and plenty of romance! A young Chinese opera singer - and the ghost of her grandmother - find themselves in the unlikely company of medicine show mountebanks and other revelers. Together, they scramble through the Santa Cruz mountains to witness the sun as it sets between the fabled Solstice Stones on the Shortest Day.
Forbidden love, questionable remedies, and magic enter the story as beloved Chinese songs and melodies interweave with holiday and folk favorites in English, together with exuberant traditional Chinese and Western music and dance!
